Epic Games, Inc., also known as Epic, formerly known as Epic MegaGames, is an American video game and software development company located in Cary, North Carolina. In 1991, Tim Sweeney founded Epic MegaGames in Rockville, Maryland, based on the Potomac computer system. In the same year, it announced its flagship product: ZZT through the Potomac computer system. ZZT started the popularity of Epic MegaGames in the industry. Then Epic MegaGames developed four games: "Epic Pinball", "Jill's Jungle", "Lightspeed Bunny" and "Survival of the Fittest: 2097". Here's Robbo, Heartlight, Electro Man, etc. In 1997, Epic MegaGames acquired Safari Software. The acquired content included copyrights of all the company's products and trademarks before 1998.

In 1998, Epic MegaGames released "Unreal", a 3D first-person shooter game, which has now grown into a series. Thanks to a completely self-developed 3D game engine, the company tried to develop other games based on this engine.

In 1999, the company officially changed its name to Epic Games, and its headquarters moved from Rockville, Maryland to Cary, North Carolina. In 2006, Epic Games released the best-selling "War" machine based on the xbox 360 game platform and related progress information on the development of "Unreal Tournament 3". On August 20, 2007, Epic Games acquired a game developer based in Poland, People Can Fly, and became its largest shareholder.

The core members of Epic Games include the aforementioned chief programmer Tim Sweeney and game planner Cliff Bleszinski, as well as Jerry O'Flaherty who was appointed as the company’s artistic director in 2003, and the top programmers at the Epic Games Cary headquarters.
