Sonic Team was originally led by Yuji Naka, a well-known game designer, producer and programmer. Under the leadership of Sonic Team, Sonic Team has created many well-known best-selling games, including "Sonic Adventure", "NiGHTS into Dreams" and so on. On May 8, 2006, Naka Yuji left Sonic Team with ten colleagues and established an independent game development company "PROPE".

After the failure of Dreamcast, Sonic Team began to move closer to Nintendo. The most obvious example is that Sonic the Hedgehog's later release platforms are mostly Nintendo-based platforms. In addition, Sonic Team has repeatedly published praise for Nintendo consoles.

"Sonic the Hedgehog" for handheld game consoles was not produced by Sonic Team. Such as "Sonic the HedgehogGBA Series" and "Sonic the Hedgehog RUSH" are developed by the "Dimps" company.
